Scientists have found that specific pro and anti inflammatory cytokines are present in the early stages of the illness ie up to 3 years and then disappear. The cytokine alterations were associated with illness duration rather than illness severity.
The marked association with interferon gamma (IFNy) found in the early stages is consistent with a viral trigger or disrupted immune regulation. These findings may have implications for early diagnosis of ME/CFS, if the findings can be repeated with further studies. Reference Mady Horing et, al, (2015). Distinct plasma immune signatures in ME/CFS are present early in the course of the illness.
